Computer End of Life: Best Practice

Mar 26, 2017

As you know, the technology keeps evolving. It means that CPUs get obsolete and computers become end of life, even the Fanless ones! This is now the case for Intense PC Ivy Bridge, becoming EOL this quarter. Don’t panic, we’ve got you covered with some best practice to follow!

Don’t Fear Changes & EOL!

Computers getting end of life is a positive thing! As technology evolves it brings hardware with new or enhanced features so you get an improved computer. Intense PC mentioned above has been a successful fanless mini PC for many years. It was rugged, small, reliable and offered rich I/O and extended functionalities. But it was powered by Ivy Bridge – an Intel CPU released in 2012.

Since then Intel has released many other processors up to the latest one (Kaby Lake) which is 4K ready processor and has a better clock speed than its predecessors Ivy Bridge, Haswell or Broadwell. As a result, the latest fanless Intel mini computer available from us (Intense PC3) offers even better graphics rendering and will also be faster while consuming less power.

Anticipate Changes & Optimise your Computer

Changes are not to fear if you spot and anticipate your need first and then give yourself enough time to change your hardware.

Explain your needs to your account manager: he should guide you through the portfolio of products and make suggestions. Why not have a new model that could be a faster and cost less? Or a PC that consumes less? Or a smaller PC performing as well?

Allow you time to test the model with your existing application to evaluate the computer and see if it ticks all your boxes.

Evaluate the Computer’s Stability

If you start a project with a new hardware provider, ask for the estimated end of life of the model. For example, our latest and improved Fitlet PC (an enhanced rugged micro AMD PC) will be in production until 2024.

Not only you will be able to purchase this PC until 2024, but it also means that drivers and support will be consistent during that time. Also, it will take you time and money to create or optimise your solution so best if you don’t have to do it all over again each year.
